Sir Ken Robinson: Do Schools Kill Creativity?

  1. Mar 11, 2010 at 02:05 PM by kiwicafe

they are not talking about artists, they are talking about creativity, creativity can be applied to pig farming as equally as it can be to learning the harpsichord :)

@tchaccaroo There is an approach to home-education called 'un-schooling'. It's called that because it does not try to replicate 'school' at home, but rather to harness a child's natural drive to WANT to learn by encouraging hir interests, and along the way elaborate on certain aspects which us contemporary adults 'think of' as subjects [maths, physics, writing, etc]. There are unschooling groups in Australia - google it, there's heaps of resources/info.

@funkiwi44 Look at your reasoning again. In the first paragraph you say there are going to tons of bad jobs that nobody will do. In the next paragraph you say that the flood of artists is going to cause most them to be unable to support themselves because there is going to be too much competition. Do you see the answer to both problems? The artists may have to take some bad jobs in order to do what they want. Is it unrealistic to think the garbage man could also be a painter on the side?

I guess another question which needs to be considered, is who will do all the boring and horrible jobs if each and every person is free to follow their full creative potential? No wait, don't tell me... the robots we haven't manufactured yet. And how will all these billions of new artists support themselves when having to compete for sales in a flooded market? A revolutionary robot-driven welfare system? Cynicism aside, I really enjoyed this speech. Truly inspirational.

@lcdrovers You raise a good point and although I don't agree with it, I think it's important to have healthy debate on such an important issue. @ ppl who downrate (just because they disagree): If you keep closing all the curtains, your house will become a very dark place!

Great! Ken's said it in such an appealing way. Now, is anyone actually doing anything towards an education system that matches these ideas? There's been a lot of criticism to (to which I strongly agree) but what are we doing to change it, to create an alternative? If you guys know of any school or education group worth mentioning here, specially in Australia, please list. I wanna take part in this revolution... Thanks TED.

@jajamansan88 Better that than discribing physically active kids as suffering from ADHD.

Great speach ! I believe in educating all teachers in movement, dance and theatre to open their eyes for possibilites. To play gives control but in a good way. The bad teachers I remember from school were the ones that were scared of unpredictable questions and got angry if they didn't know the answer. They could have thrown the question back to us. Which would have been easier for them and much more educating for us. No-one knows everything anyway.

You obviously have not listened to the interview where Mr Dodd mentions the method and motives for subverting the educational system. I think you need a border understanding of geopolitics or is that not clear enough for you.

she rocks has been anything but safe-and that's why people like here . "naked lady gaga DOT comm" founded

That interview is about the "New World Order", nothing relevant to this at all. The education system has been this way for years, and TED is a private group, most of it comes from donations. Besides, financing a group like this has no relevance to the topics presented. It's a private group. I don't know who the "narcissistic psychopathic money changers", but you seem to not know how to make a valid argument.

I find it very difficult to take these intellectual prisoners on face value when they criticize systems or institutions but fail to mention the people deliberately responsible for them. People such as those mentioned in Norman Dodd's interview by G. Edward Griffin. Who finances TED??? You can talk all you want about peace, love and creativity till the cows come home but nothing will change until these narcissistic psychopathic money changers who are directly responsible are dealt with!

The job of "school" is to turn out robotic compliant citizens who fear perceived authority and follow orders. No freethinkers please. New World Order education.

The main problem in our schools, aside from a lack of focus on the arts, can be found in the history of the system. Our school system was designed during the industrial age, built in the same fashion as the factories, to produce factory workers. We are not sugar cookies - we are all different, and until we can embrace our differences in our education system, we are doomed to failure. Thank you, Sir Ken Robinson, for turning up the heat on our broken schools.

I've had a teacher who told me the best piece of advice; "I don't teach you anything you can't go find in a library, I make sure you chase beauty, art, and music, if you don't like that, fuck off". We laughed for like five minutes, and I knew right there, I would never meet another person like that again. Inspiration is literally one sentence away.

@666fruitfly , Except the Army, isn't the first employed to the frontlines, its the Marines. You know, the same Marines using 40+ year old equipment. Many of the time, its correct training, not the "what if", that keeps soldiers above every other class. The correct training is never found in universities like Yale or Harvard. Only the equipment (labs, books, etc). It's how the child is raised to believe that he is good, not the school, and most schools don't even attempt to do this

A class group that I am in, is supposed to teach our humanities class on how to be creative. We have had no direction what so ever and I thought this video would be great to open with.

WONDERFUL!!!!!! I'm a student myself & I feel if I was allowed more creativity @ school I'd feel more accepted & flourish in what I do best, making music. Thank you!

summers off come from the harvest break in farming days, it's compulsory because its masterminds need our full attention, no choice allowed, it's poorly equipped because only a small number are required for the most advanced jobs which require the most advanced thinking, it's almost universally boring and uninspiring, at times utterly pointless on a personal level, for millions of young people every day, dollars DO equal better teachers, better equipment, and better training (think army)
